Homesteading on the Cumberland Plateau

We are actually homesteading by degrees. The property had septic, electric and water already here from the previous owner. We will develop the spring for gravity fed water to the house, install our solar panels, build a solar hot water heater, and hook up the wood stove to the hot water heater. I am not sure in what order we will do these projects.
No house, so we had to build from scratch. We have done a major overhauling on the property and cleaned up 200+ tires, household trash, hundreds of beer bottles, snuff cans, etc. We have discovered so many treasures!! Flowers, flowering trees, mature fruit trees, grape vines, etc. So much was covered up with overgrowth and trash. We have thoroughly cleaned the front part of the property, and will work on the back this fall. I wrote an article about this in Rural Heritage which will be in their May/June edition.

While building, we were able to put in a 1/2 acre garden. So far we have potatoes, corn, green beans, crowder peas, tomatoes, squash, okra, peppers, cukes, beets, lettuce, cabbage, brocolli and greens. We also planted an orchard, raspberries and blueberries.

It looks like I may have another article sold about purchasing land- (what to look for in a piece of property - live water, tillable land, location, etc.) to BackHome Magazine. I will get the final verdict soon.
We are also starting a website : Herb and Plow which is already getting a lot of hits and we are doing nothing with it. Anyway it will be informational about homesteading and natural remedies. Hope to get it off the ground soon.
